REMSAT (Real-time Emergency Management via Satellites) has demonstrated how satellite data concerning forest fires can be successfully accessed through a hand-held user terminal at the actual scene of a forest blaze in British Columbia, Canada. One future area of research is developing a transportable, user-friendly and rugged transportable satellite telecommunications system intended to replace local telecommunications damaged during a disaster situation.
